Hurling began its growth in Youghal in the 1940's, when the local gardai and also the army, who had a barracks situated at Cork Hill. They had a big influence in spreading the game of hurling in the town of Youghal. Our club history, 'UP THE YOUGHAL BOYS' by Frank Keane, shows that in 1940 the princely sum of 12s.0d (60p in present day money) was spent on sliothars!! In 1944, the club won a County Minor Hurling Championship title, and from there the game found firm roots in Youghal. |
